BLACK LAKE (Crno jezero), ŽABLJAK, DURMITOR, MONTENEGRO

Because of its beauty and accessibility is a trademark of Durmitor.
Impressive Mali Međed on the south coast, with somewhat further, Savin kuk on its left and Crvena greda, on its right side, larch forests on all sides, that is what make this lake one of the most magnificent lakes among all. From Zabljak, it can be reached by asphalt road (around 3 km) and from Ivan do it takes about 500m walk through larche forests.

Therefore, Black Lake can be reached easily with no effort. You can visit the lake even with your children in strollers. It is situated at an altitude of 1416m. It is a glacial lake, with a suface area of about 0.5 km2 and shaped as a number eight, since it was actually formed of two smaller lakes, Great and Small lake.

Length is approximately 1155m and the lake is wide up to 810m. Length of coast varies from 3900m in the summer to 4295m in the spring. This information is for those who enjoy walking because Black Lake is surrounded by walking trail. When the water level drops very low, the lake is separated in two by a barrier, but this doesn’t happen quite often. Water flows faster from the Small lake and that is why it is 4-6 m lower level than the one of the Great Lake. Surprisingly the Small lake contains a larger amount of water as it is deeper, so at the maximum water level the depth is 49.1m while the depth of the Great lake is around 24.5m. During hot summers, temperature reaches up to 18 ° C at the surface, but on the northern, shallower part, closer to the coast, the temperature even goes up to 24 ° C so seeing swimmers enjoying the lake is not uncommon at all.
There is also an option to rent a nice, wooden boat for a rowing on the lake and enjoy incredible view directly from the water as well.
