ZMINJE (ZMIJINJE) LAKE, ŽABLJAK, DURMITOR, MONTENEGRO

If you are inexperienced hiker, out of shape and prefer to take children on a hiking with you, then going to Zminje jezero (Snake Lake) is a perfect choice for you. The path is well marked, starts through larch forests and later continuous to the forest road which can be reached by car too. In dry weather, you do not need any special hiking shoes either because the path is well trodden. From Ivan do it takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the lake.

The lake is located right near the spring that later becomes Mlinski potok (Mill creek). Hidden in the depths of the forest, in the stillness, this place as it is created for meditation. Little in size, located in a tight oval belt made of spruce, faithfully captures so called “Mountain Eye” (Gorsko oko) (scientist Jovan Cvijić referred to lakes of Durmitor as "Mountain Eyes"). Zminje lake – a mountain eye that looks at
Zminje lake and Crvena greda in background.
This lake is at an altitude of 1520m and the maximum depth goes up to 7.7 meters. On the way to Zminje lake, going along the edge of the forest, at one point you will notice, on the right, a sign for another Durmitor lake known as Barno lake. Going forward, close to our finish line, you will find on your right a sign with a map. When you get to the sign, turn left and follow the hike trail for another three hundred meters and you will reach the Zminje lake. There is a walking trail around the lake. Also, there is a picnic table with benches by the lake, and only few meters away you can find the wellspring of drinking water.
A Spring near Zminje lake
Do not forget to throw your trash to existing baskets or, even better, to take it back with you and throw it in the garbage back in "civilization”. This lake certainly deserves at least that. You can return following the same way, but we recommend that you return following the path that goes along the Mill creek (which is almost parallel to the road, on its right, South side). When you get to Jaksic mill, you can turn left, uphill towards Ivan do. If you decide to continue along the creek, you would reach the coast of the Black Lake in no time. It’s up to you.
